چکیده
MD, Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), São Paulo SP, Brazil; MD, PhD, Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, UNIFESP. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a fetal protein produced in the yolk sac and in the fetal liver. AFP has been implicated in both ontogenic and oncogenic growth disorders. Although the main biologic role of AFP during pregnancy remains controversial to this day, AFP has been related to fetal birth defects and tumors. AFP is recognized as one of the first tumor markers. It was first associated with hepatocellular carcinomas and later to germ cell tumors. The autosomal recessive ataxias, including ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) and ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2 (AOA2), belong to a special group of hereditary ataxias with heterogeneous presentation. Simple laboratory studies, like AFP measurement, have been reported to be helpful in the differential diagnosis of ataxias. The purpose of this review is to describe the association of serum AFP with recessive ataxias. We report the clinical and laboratory findings of three patients with a recessive ataxia profile.

Autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias
Autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias (ARCA) are a heterogeneous group of rare neurological disorders involving both central and peripheral nervous system, and in some case other systems and organs, and characterized by degeneration or abnormal development of cerebellum and spinal cord, autosomal recessive inheritance and, in most cases, early onset occurring before the age of 20 years. This g...

Ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) is one of a group of autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias. Presentation is usually by the age of 2 years and ataxia of both upper and lower limbs develops, such that by early teenage most patients require a wheelchair for mobility. Speech and eye movement are also affected. Other important features are t(7;14) translocations, immunodeficiency, a high serum alpha fe...

The ataxia - telangiectasia or Louis - Bar syndrome is a rare hereditary disease. The inheritance pattern is autosomal recessive, locus gene has been mapped to the long arm of chromosome 11. The onset of the disease coincides more or less with the acquisition of walking, which is awkward and unsteady. The characteristic telangiectatic lesions, are mainly subpapillary vascular plexuses of the bu...

BACKGROUND Autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias (ARCA) are a group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by early onset of gait impairment, disturbed limb coordination, dysarthria, and eye movement abnormalities, most likely due to the degeneration of cerebellum, brainstem, and spinal cord. Despite of the rarity, ARCA are both clinically and genetically heterogeneous. To date, more tha...

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a serum glycoprotein belonging to the onco-developmental proteins group, serves as a marker both in cancer research and in studies concerning fetal development and fetal pathophysiology. Monoclonal anti-AFP antibodies are essential reagents in developing appropriate techniques for measurement of this protein. In this study, in order to produce anti-AFP monoclonal a...
